About Swimlane Prep

Swimlane Prep is an independent study site for the CAPM® exam. The name comes from the swimlane diagram, which gives every role its own lane and puts each handoff where everyone can see it. The site tries the same thing with the exam: each topic gets a lane, each fact gets a source, and each answer option gets a note. It is not connected to PMI®, and PMI has not reviewed anything published here.

Who publishes it

Swimlane Prep comes from the small publisher behind the CAPM practice app for iPhone and iPad. Everything on the site is free to use without an account: the CAPM practice test, the timed sprint, the topic pages and the fact pages.

No person on this site is presented as a credentialed author, and none is invented. The pages carry no bylines; the checks listed below are what stands behind them.

How cards and facts are checked

  • Every card was written for study. None is a PMI item, and none was recalled from a live exam.
  • Each card was answered blind, from its stem and options alone, before the key was compared. Cards where the two disagreed were replaced.
  • Each option carries its own note, so a wrong pick explains itself instead of just being marked wrong.
  • Exam facts come from PMI’s own documents: the CAPM Examination Content Outline, the Certification Handbook, the CCR Handbook and PMI’s store pages. Each fee, date or rule appears with its source and the day it was read.
  • Where PMI publishes nothing, the site prints nothing. That covers the passing score and any predictive-to-agile split, and because PMI does not publish a pass rate, none appears here either.
  • PMI publishes weights for its four domains only. The 13 topics are this site’s split of those domains, and each topic page names the domain it belongs to instead of claiming a weight of its own.
  • Pay data comes only from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which reports on project management specialists as an occupation and has no figure for CAPM holders.

What the site does not do

It does not sell PMI exams, memberships or courses, and it does not count toward the 23 hours of project management education that PMI requires before the exam; PMI’s outline names the kinds of providers that do, listed on the CAPM requirements page.

PMI, CAPM, PMP and PMBOK are registered marks of the Project Management Institute, Inc. They appear on these pages only to name the exam and the documents it is built on. What happens when you press an app button is set out on the privacy page, and how to report a mistake is on the contact page.

The CAPM practice app

The app is on iPhone and iPad. On Android or a laptop, the practice board on this site is the free option.
