How to become a project manager, and where the CAPM fits in

You become a project manager by running small pieces of work first and making that work visible: a coordinator or analyst role, a credential that shows you know the vocabulary, and later a credential that needs documented experience. The CAPM® from PMI® sits at the start of that line, and PMI lists no experience requirement for it (PMI’s CAPM page, checked October 30, 2026).

What the job data says about getting in

The closest U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics occupation is project management specialists (SOC 13-1082). BLS counted 1,094,300 of those jobs in 2025, projects 7% growth from 2025 to 2035 and about 76,500 openings a year (BLS, checked October 30, 2026).

For entry, BLS says a bachelor’s degree is typical. On credentials it is careful: Although not always required, certification may be beneficial. Pay figures for the same occupation are on the BLS salary page.

Titles on the first rung vary by employer: project coordinator, project analyst, junior project manager, PMO assistant. The common thread is ownership of a schedule, a list of risks or a status report that somebody senior reads.

A route from no title to project manager

  1. Step 1

    Take the project-shaped work nearby

Volunteer to keep the schedule, the risk list or the action items on work you already do. Each of those becomes a line on a résumé with a real project attached.

  2. Step 2

Collect 23 hours of project management education

The CAPM asks for 23 hours, finished before the exam, from a listed provider type: training company, employer program, PMI chapter, university, or a distance course with an end-of-course assessment (CAPM ECO, checked October 30, 2026). The full rules are on the CAPM requirements page.

  3. Step 3

    Sit the CAPM

150 questions in 3 hours, at a Pearson VUE center or online. The exam fee is $225 for PMI members and $300 otherwise (PMI store, U.S. pricing, checked October 30, 2026). The order of steps is laid out in how to apply and schedule.

  4. Step 4

Move into a coordinator or analyst seat

Apply for roles that put a schedule, a budget line or a stakeholder list in your name. The credential gets you into the conversation; the interview asks what you ran.

  5. Step 5

Log project hours as you go

The PMP® needs documented project experience. An active CAPM fulfills the PMP’s 35-hour training requirement (PMI’s PMP page, checked October 30, 2026); the trade-offs are in the CAPM vs PMP comparison.

  6. Step 6

    Keep the CAPM active

It renews every 3 years with 15 professional development units (PDUs), with no second exam (CCR Handbook, checked October 30, 2026). The cycle is explained on the renewal page.

Before you plan the route

Can you become a project manager without a degree?

Employers set their own bar. BLS says a bachelor’s degree is typical for project management specialists (BLS, checked October 30, 2026). The CAPM itself asks for a high school diploma, GED or global equivalent plus 23 hours of project management education (CAPM ECO, checked October 30, 2026).

Is the CAPM enough to land a project manager job?

No credential is a job offer. BLS says certification is not always required but may be beneficial (BLS, checked October 30, 2026). The CAPM shows you know the vocabulary of predictive, agile and business analysis work; a hiring manager still asks what you have coordinated.

Should you skip the CAPM and go straight for the PMP?

Only if you already have the documented project experience the PMP requires. Without it, the CAPM is the PMI exam you can sit now, and an active CAPM fulfills the PMP’s 35-hour training requirement (PMI’s PMP page, checked October 30, 2026). The two are set against each other in the CAPM vs PMP comparison.

What do project management specialists earn?

BLS reports a median of $102,320 a year in May 2025 for SOC 13-1082 (BLS, checked October 30, 2026). That covers the whole occupation, certified or not; BLS has no CAPM split.

Which first certification fits someone with no experience?

The CAPM, the Google certificate and PSM I ask for no experience; CSM asks for its course. All five common options are compared in first project management certifications.
